TechExpo' Season 6 - What Happened..(while I was away)

Hello and welcome back to another installment of...

A lot has changed in such a short time. So let me explain somethings.

Now, TechExpo' is ran solely by me (Matthew Rischer), and i have great expectations for the future. I'm back from my small holiday (eh a few months longer than planned), and i look forward to providing all those that are readers with the most up to date technological news.

I only ask that you guys continue to be patient with me, as i am arranging my life accordingly to fit everything in its respective place.

So lets get in to a little news...

Since last we spoke, alot has happened

The iPhone 6s/6s Plus has made its debut, as well as the Galaxy Note 5, Motorola 360 (2nd Gen), as well as Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), just to name a few major things.

also with the development of mobile payment systems such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay.
Technology is making leaps and bounds into the future, that we may or may not be ready for.

with items like smart washer/dryers to smart-fabric that records your body movement, there are so many things for me to dive in, so with that being said!

stick around as I do just that!

nothing major in this post just one big ol Welcome Back!

Google : Rumors and Speculation

Hello, and welcome back to another installment of......

we are glad you made it back...

This post will be a short one.....

Google has officially made their wireless service available. Currently its only available for Nexus 6 owners, but that tactic is obviously geared toward selling more handsets. Which is fine, but most likely will be short-lived.

moving on....

with Google now serving as a wireless carrier, and pushing sales for the Nexus 6, is it plausible for them to extend their reach into Apple's territory?

Rumors have been circling about, saying that Google was developing an Android Wear app for iOS,
and if this rumor has any truth to it....
Apple could be in some real trouble...

What is that company to do?

Apple is currently focusing on the Apple Watch and its sales, and if Google steps in the way of that with Android Wear, many people that do not like the design or battery life of the Apple Watch may resort to Android wearables , The Apple Watch's main selling point is that its one of the few high-quality smart watches that is compatible with Apple and is available at this moment, however if Android Wear for iOS becomes reality, that will no longer be so. People could actually pair their iPhones with Moto 360's or Asus Zen Watches, some of which are the best smartwatches available from Google....

and there is more...Google and Apple have not had the most pleasant history when it comes to making the same apps available in their respective application stores.

If Apple decides to block this potential Android Wear app, what does that say to the customers?
It says to us that Apple wants what Apple wants and the customers rights to desire something other than what they make, are irreverent. It may also spark the idea for people to abandon the iPhone and seek that perfect Smartphone/Smartwatch pairing elsewhere...

We say well played with Google, the ball is in Apple's court now.
They have a tough decision to make, and we here at TechExpo anxiously await their decision....

Google...as a cell service provider? Is this real?

welcome to another installment of........

and apparently.....Google is making some more of their infamous "major moves".

There have been talks and rumors going about suggesting that Google Inc., for some time now, have been considering the idea of becoming a cell service provider. Based on that last sentence alone, this could turn the world of mobile smart phones completely upside down.
'
"I'm (Matthew) freaking out just a little bit at the news"....those were my exact words, reading the story this morning, parenthesis and all.

I mean could you imagine going to a Google store or kiosk like you would do for At&t or Verizon and not only purchasing an unlocked device, but a cell service as well? That would be mindbogglingly amazing. and not to mention that this would definitely upset all the other processes that current popular companies already have in place. including roll-over data, and the UN-carrier craze currently going about the nation.

Speaking of un-carrier, it is also rumored that Google could possibly use some of T-mobile and Sprint's towers to provide their services. Yes, I see that face your are making, because I'm making a similar one, i know you think this may not be the best idea, but honestly these companies are not on top at the moment, maybe with assistance from Google (who also happens to have proven ties with other manufacturing companies such as Motorola and Htc) these companies can rise up together. Its not like they have other lucrative choices outside their own semi-annual gimmicks.

Since Google has already had marginal success with their 'Fiber' project for Internet services, its apparent that the company is more than ready to get their feet wet with cell service..

and of course I have questions.
such as, but not limited too..

- how much would the service cost?
- will there be early upgrade incentives?
- will the devices that are sold be unlocked?
- will there be contracts?
- unlimited data?
- supported updates of the latest android software?
- replacement device options?
- insurance?

more than likely Google will be prepared for these questions, and many more that I didn't think of.
However, right now I already want them to take my money.

I mean, come on.....Google and your cell service provider?

How cool is that?!

In any event....

Project Ara - The Future of Smartphones

Welcome Back to another installment of TechExpo' (The Technological Expose') !
I am your announcing clerk, Matthew a.k.a / f.k.a AwkwardlyNormal...
Its good that you've returned...
Lets get right to it shall we?

"Le' Struggle"

(a short story)

So you just bought a new phone, and for the first couple days or even weeks, you love everything about your phone. I mean everything, the screen, the button placement, the bezels, the battery life, EVERYTHING....except.......the speakers. You just wish that the speakers were just a tad bit louder, just a tad..as time goes on, you start to see phones that have front-facing speakers that delivers sound and an highly professional rate of enjoyment (boom sound on the Htc one/one M8)...and you think to yourself, i wish my phone had that...

two months later you decide..i want that, i really want those speakers on a phone, and even though you don't really like the phone all that much, you would settle for it any way just because you want those speakers, and that sound!

I speak from personal experience...this isn't hypothetical. lol
lets continue..

BUT WAIT! I just signed another 2 year contract. I mean i could just switch carriers again, but what if i leave and find out I don't really like the phone I'm going to...or the carrier for that matter...

What is one to do?

(insert awkward silence here)

Google has thought of this...

Which is why Google is currently developing a remedy to these kinds of quirks that people like myself (and I'm sure many others) have about their phones and ALL of their features.

this endeavor is know as

Google Project Ara
or as I call it...
"the birth of modular-ism"

let me explain...
so as i stated in my short story earlier, i loved everything about my phone except the speakers, remember?
well what if i could detach the speaker and replace it with another speaker that gives me the sound I'm looking for?

Better yet, what if i could change the data capacity of the phone, or the size of the screen, or switch to a larger battery, or even switch to a higher megapixel camera.....and keep the same phone...

in essence,

that's what project ara is...

you may or may not have heard this project referred to as "Phoneblocks"

same general idea...

instead of trying to buy the latest and greatest phone packed with features that will be obsolete in 6 months - 1 year anyway...

you could just purchase a block (or tile in this case) and just slide it in to a space that you choose, and there you go...upgraded specs..

not following me? here's a couple of photos to better explain...

and just like that...slide out a tile of a feature that is not one of your favorites, and replace it with one that is..

think about it.

i mean really think about it
...

i mean how awesome is that,

Naturally the tiles will lock in place to keep everything from falling to pieces when you wave/drop/bump your phone. (So i hope)

and Naturally, its going to run android, because Apple does not have the innovation or swiftness for this kind of thing..

and...

its a Google project, but my first explanation is a better one, in my opinion..lol (*side eye*).

and what really sold me is the rumor that the base models (basic specs, ready for customization upon purchasing) will be sold at or around the $50-$75 price range.

also rumored is the price of the tiles will be around $15-25.

what would be increasingly awesome is if you could trade older tiles in for new ones. to also lend a hand in cutting down price.

Google is a gigantic company, with alot of money.
and even though money is the reason they are in business,
im thinking that money isnt what they are focusing on right now

it would stand to reason that Google/Android is putting all efforts towards innovation and changing the way we use our mobile technology forever...

just as the legendary Steve Jobs did with the iPhone/iPod.

and even if Project Ara flops...

the innovation is there...

the ideas are getting better....

and this is why i write about it!

 In any event......

Chromebooks!!! Are They Really Worth It?

"Chromebook is ,essentially,  a slightly larger android-based tablet with a physical keyboard"
thats what I used to say when I worked for best buy during this past holiday season.
as the chromebook continues to retain its popularity. im inclined to stick to my statement.

for those who aren't familiar, the chromebook is a google product that provided a mid-spec ranged device that was comparable to the macbook air in size but tremendously easier on the wallet. currently....Samsung,  Hewlett Packard,  and Acer are the current hardware providers for these devices.
I,  myself, have a samsung chomebook., and ever since the untimely, however foreseen , death of my motorola xoom familiy edition (death by getting stepped on) my chromebook has been a welcomed replacement to a tablet that I hardly used anyway.  when my tablet was alive, I simply used it for emails, a few games here and there, but mostly netflix. lol with that being said the transition for me wasn't very hard.
I use my chromebook for my blogs, since I find it so much easier to type via physical keyboard rather that the on screen counterpart.

So whats the big difference you say?

well other than the gigantic price gap, the specs pose a significant difference, i suppose. for example the samsung chromebook has a dual core processor (as seen in most older tablet devices, and no its not terribly slow) and is equipped with a 16gb solid state hard-drive (for quick boot-up and saving). which makes it a more than adequate substitute for a tablet, or even a laptop.
it boots up in less than 30 seconds and as soon as  you type in your password, you are good to go. and there are no moving parts inside so overheating is not an issue.
now, as with any device, everything has a drawback, missing feature or ability that other devices have.
now with chromebooks,  you cannot install external programs, iTunes (and other programs that require installation)  for example, cannot be installed on one of these devices, instead google has provided an application store specifically for chromebooks to give you more of an exclusive experience with applications. games are available offline however.

another "con" or drawback about the chromebooks is that there is no cd/dvd rom drive. so no burning cd's or watching hard copy movies...
the final drawback about the chromebooks is that EVERYTHING is done ONLINE, there is little to no activity that can be accomplished without an internet connection.

The Greatest "Pro" about these chromebook style devices is the price!

My samsung chromebook only cost me $268 (after taxes) much less expensive than the apple alternative, and some android tablets, which, for me, was a deal breaker.

There are many variations of chromebooks out now, ranging from $199 to $1299. low to high end of course. So head on over to the Google Play Store, and check them all out and see if a chromebook could be a replacement device for you as it was for me, or a quality gift for that college student, relative or close friend! with Christmas coming up. i cant imagine many that would be disappointed with a gift like this.
